Celebrating being a Centenarian

If you happen to live for a hundred years on this wonderful planet, what would truly matter to you? I wondered about that during the recent Chuidian family reunion, where we got to greet my centenarian relative Nellie Chuidian Delgado, who was born on August 23 a century ago.

Tita Nellie walked in on her own, with just the help of a cane, but still ever so elegant and sharp. She shared her secret to long life: keeping it simple, having a positive attitude, and focusing on life experiences.

Her son, businessman Robbie Delgado, was one of our wedding sponsors and present at our 20thand 25thanniversaries. His daughter Karla Delgado- Araneta and I chatted about taking care of ourselves to hopefully reach Tita Nellie’s milestone. Karla doesn’t hold stuff in and always nurtures relationships with her family and friends, and of course, with God.

Leon Araneta and Karla Delgado of Kashmir Restaurant

Karla and her husband Leon Araneta recently acquired Kashmir Restaurant, where they want to bring their practice of eating sensibly, consuming only local organic produce, and eating in moderation. Their Kashmir Mindful Mondays, a collaboration of Kashmir and Kai Farms, offers talks, workshops and tastings to create community around food, wellness and sustainability, all served with local organic produce between lunch and dinner.

Tomorrow, Mindful Mondays features a Mindful Parenting talk with two licensed counselors – Ani Mata and Ivana Mabunay. The talk will focus on how parents regulate and manage gadget time with kids and with themselves. The session comes with a farm to table dinner by Chef Aliya Ignacio. To attend, head over to Kashmir in San Antonio Plaza, Makati City. The Mindful Parenting Talk is P500, and the farm to table, five-course, organic and sustainable produce dinner is P2200. Halfway to their centennial is Ballet Philippines, and they are celebrating their Golden Anniversary Season with a production of the classical ballet, “Swan Lake.” The company continues to set the bar for dance in the country. This performance features an acclaimed, all-star cast with stars from the Mariinsky Ballet (formerly the Kirov Ballet) performing during the gala night this weekend.

Evgeny Ivanchenko, principal dancer and Honored Artist of Russia in 2010, and principal dancer and first soloist Elena Evseeva take on the lead roles as Prince Siegfried and the Swan Queen Odette and the evil Odile. Setting the stage is internationally renowned set designer Eduardo Sicangco, as well as Tony-award winner and lighting goddess Jennifer Tipton, who will be lending her lighting genius and flair. Looking so regal, former Miss Universe Margie Moran joins the cast as the Queen.

Ballet Philippines president Kathleen Lior-Liechtenstein is also busy with preparations for their 50thAnniversary Gala on September 29 at The Grand Ballroom Marriott Hotel Manila. The Gala will feature Dubai-based fashion designer Michael Cinco’s eponymous 2019 Couture Collection, with the “Swan Lake” dancers lending to the ambience. Funds raised will be used for the Foundation’s scholarship and outreach programs.

Love and partnership are critical for a long life. Centenarians often talk about their “good” marriage, all their happy memories, and all their good times together with family. They may be recalling the past with rose-tinted glasses, but clearly the optimistic attitude helps with a healthy life.

Love relationships are so complex nowadays. Watching the latest movie of showbiz sweetheart Anne Curtis-Smith-Heusaff’s “Just A Stranger”was quite enjoyable as she portrays a role of an older woman falling in love with a younger man. Swatch grand dame Virgie S. Ramos hosted a special screening of Anne’s movie at the Podium. Before the screening, five women from the audience were paired with some younger men and were asked to recreate Anne’s movie poster in the most creative and fun way they could. Guests were also gifted with their very own Big Bold watch for participating in the games that Matteo and Anne had for their perspective screenings. For Matteo Guidecelli’s Mina-Anud movie screening game, guests gave their best attempts at the iconic “Tusok-Ulo” military practice.

I wish to travel as often as I am able to do so. I am so passionate about travelling, although I still need to work on the art of packing lightly. In the meantain, I have found joy in collecting suitcases. So I was happy to attend the recent opening of the Victorinox Gallery.

As August marks the celebration of Swiss Month, the Primer Group of Companies, Lucerne and Grimalkin, exclusive distributors of Victorinox travel gear, watches and Swiss Army knives respectively, showcased the Victorinox Gallery that chronicles the milestones of Victorinox.

The event was graced by the Southeast Asian regional management team of Victorinox, executives from the Primer Group of Companies, Lucerne and Grimalkin, VIP representatives of SM, members of the press, and Filipino-Swiss celebrities. Multi-award-winning actress Dina Bonnevie, Lotus F1 Team racing driver Marlon Stöckinger and Philippine National Ice Hockey Team Captain Steven Füglister, were awarded the Karl Elsener Commemorative Coin Set by the newly-appointed Swiss Ambassador to the Philippines, His Excellency Alain Gaschen.

The opening performance was a drum solo featuring Victorinox Travel Gear. Also displayed at the gallery were Victorinox I.N.O.X. Watches by Lucerne and a free engraving station for Swiss Army Knives by Grimalkin. Victorinox Philippines Travel Gear Brand Manager Vianca Tan and Senior Marketing Supervisor Abby Borbon turned the spotlight on Victorinox as a bastion of Swiss innovation.
